Why is this so normal? Rather than base promotions on rankings against each other, why aren’t we setting goals and promoting the people who show they can do the next level jobs?
I also noticed that you were careful to state that the women in the room were asked for their opinion whenever “women’s issues“ were discussed. I hope they are asked for their opinion on all issues. Given the split of women to men, I assume that’s the case. Good to see the balance.
Very well written peek behind the curtain, and more accurate than I wish it were. These are hard decisions and good executive teams agonize over each and every one. Sounds like you have a good team that is having robust discussions (two points above notwithstanding). That’s key for an executive team and it doesn’t always happen.
And the person was absolutely right - employees don’t really care. They expect the senior team to work that hard and no decision will ever be made ”best” for every employee. Good executives understand the responsibility and lack of recognition.
Sounds like you got a good glimpse! I hope it isn’t your last. We need people willing to do the work to make the best tough decisions they can.
